The most important questions about the GHG quota

What is the GHG quota?

The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Quota (GHG quota) requires fossil fuel companies to reduce their CO₂ emissions. By trading these quotas, companies can offset their carbon footprint. In return, owners of public charging infrastructure and electric vehicles receive an annual payout.

Who can apply for the GHG quota?

GHG quota eligibility applies to operators of public charging stations and owners of electric vehicles. CONNECT handles the entire process for public charge points operated via CONNECT . EV owners can easily submit their application online.

What documents do I need to apply for the GHG quota?

To register a vehicle, a digital copy of both sides of the vehicle registration certificate is required. For public charging stations operated via CONNECT, no additional documents are needed.

When will I receive my GHG quota?

For vehicles, processing usually takes up to three months. For public infrastructure, the timeline depends on the workload at the German Environment Agency. CONNECT submits all applications promptly to ensure fast payouts to your designated bank account.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About the GHG Quota

Companies that process or distribute CO2-emitting fuels are only allowed to cause a certain amount of greenhouse gas under § 37 of the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). For each additional ton of CO2, penalties must be paid. These penalties can be avoided by selling or mixing more environmentally friendly fuels or purchasing GHG quotas—essentially saved CO2—from third parties. Since 2019, electricity has been traded as an environmentally friendly and low-emission fuel with GHG quotas. The certified saved CO2 from emission-free electric vehicles can therefore be sold to quota-obligated companies.

Your provided data, including the uploaded documents, are handled in accordance with data protection regulations (GDPR). They are only used and stored for the purposes agreed upon in our privacy policy, which are necessary for the GHG quota. Data sharing with third parties is excluded.

All registered vehicle owners are entitled to the GHG quota. This means the person or entity listed in the vehicle registration document (Part I). For company vehicles, this is usually the business itself. Since 2022, operators of publicly accessible charging stations are also eligible. CONNECT acts as the operator, handles the registration, and manages the GHG quota application process on your behalf.

The GHG quota for vehicles must be submitted to CONNECT by November 9 of the current year. This deadline allows us to meet the legal cutoff of November 15. Vehicles registered after that date are no longer eligible for the current year. GHG quotas for charging infrastructure are submitted quarterly and must be filed by January 31 of the following year.

Yes, vehicle owners must submit a new application each year. Your data will be saved in your personal login, making future submissions easy. This does not apply to charging infrastructure. CONNECT manages the quota application automatically for the full duration of your service contract. No yearly reapplication is necessary. Please note that retroactive applications are not possible once the deadlines have passed.

Yes, leasing vehicles are eligible. The registered owner (as listed in Part I of the vehicle registration certificate) is eligible. The GHG quota can only be applied for once per year.

Yes, you will receive the full bonus if you purchased the vehicle this year. The vehicle must be in your possession for at least one day within the year to qualify. For used electric cars, if the GHG quota has already been claimed, you cannot apply for it again in that year.

The amount is reviewed annually and depends on the legal quota and the composition of the German electricity mix. CONNECT will inform you of the applicable premium for the upcoming contract year by the end of each year. For detailed terms and conditions, please contact us directly.

The GHG quota bonus is paid as credit. The tax situation differs for private and business owners:

  • Private individuals not running a business with the registered vehicle do not need to pay taxes on the bonus.
  • Businesses must declare the bonus as business income.
