The Right Time for Electric Trucks

Embrace an emission-free future

Electromobility represents an excellent alternative for heavy-duty and commercial vehicles. E-trucks are quieter, emission-free, and provide significant cost-saving potential in comparison to vehicles with combustion engines. Furthermore, electric trucks are exempt from the CO2 truck toll introduced in Germany at the end of 2023 and may benefit from government subsidies.

Discover the opportunities that e-mobility brings to your business and how modern technology contributes to lower emissions. With CONNECT's 360° offering, ranging from analysis to operation, we are the competent partner by your side. Together, we shape the sustainable future of logistics – clean, efficient, and innovative.

FAQ for Electric Truck Charging

Key questions & answers

  • Lower operating and maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts
  • Reduced emissions and noise pollution
  • Savings on the CO2 truck toll introduced at the end of 2023
  • The EU’s Clean Vehicle Directive promotes an increase of electric vehicles, ensuring long-term demand and support for electric trucks, particularly in municipal applications
  • Improved green image of companies using electric trucks

Similar to electric cars, there are different chargers: alternating current (AC) chargers for slower charging and direct current (DC) chargers for significantly faster charging procedures.

However, due to the larger batteries in e-trucks compared to electric cars, longer and higher power charging is required.

The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is also being developed, allowing charging at up to 3.75 MW (1,250 V, 3,000 A), making it possible to charge the required energy during the legally mandated break times for truck drivers.

Charging time depends on the battery capacity and charging power. With a DC fast charger, an E-truck can be charged in about 1 to 3 hours, while an AC charger will take significantly longer.

A company needs a sufficient number of chargers with appropriate power levels, a stable and adequate power supply, an energy management system to optimise charging times, and potentially additional transformers and cabling.

Costs vary greatly depending on the size and features of the charging park. Smaller parks can start around 500,000 euros, while large, fully equipped parks can cost several million euros.

Business models include usage fees for charging, subscriptions for fleet operators, partnerships with logistics companies, and integration into larger mobility concepts.

Renewable energies are crucial for ensuring sustainability in electromobility. Charging parks can be combined with solar or wind power installations to provide environmentally friendly energy supply.

Key trends include the development of autonomous electric trucks, the integration of smart charging systems, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, and the growing use of large electric trucks in logistics and transport. The technology is advancing rapidly, with improvements in battery capacity, charging speed, and overall energy efficiency. Future developments may also include hydrogen fuel cells and solid-state batteries.
